In urban planning terms the project strengthens the basic concept of a bridge, which is viewed very positively. With its slender compact quality, it becomes even more strongly a linear experience space between Strandbadstraße and Doktor-Franz-Riel-Promenade, along the banks of the Danube. Consequently, the relationship between the city and the Danube can be experienced on all levels, whether by actively exploring and using the different sections or through the visual connections to the two important poles of this urban-landscape system. In addition, the option of a direct pedestrian connection to the city with the help of a bridge across the B3 federal motorway is considered, which connects to the footpath and bike path on the town side and can be integrated in the roundabout concept with the railway underpass that leads in the direction of the town centre. The details of these connections should be developed in conjunction with future traffic planning. If a bike connection is required, it could be made using a spiral ramp.

“Here on the Donaustrandterrasse Campari tastes better than anywhere else – and it’s easy to meet people here!”, someone might call to the people strolling along Doktor-Franz-Riel-Promenade.

The horizontally and vertically layered functional areas allow complex routes to be disentangled, while at the same time offering a passageway that is easy to use and self-explanatory, running between the Danube bank and the forecourt to the swimming arena, from where you can make use of various possible connections (pedestrian bridge, bike parking area, bus stop, car park) to the town centre.

The areas relating to swimming are separated by subtly articulated built measures, in this way preventing the different functions from entangling. In this way the public restaurant – which can be visited without having to buy a ticket for the baths – is ideally connected to the public network of routes.

The urban design disposition of the complex as a whole is nuanced by proposing an area directly beside the tennis courts as the location for the future sports hall.
Here the hall can interact with the courts. The carpark will be positioned between the future hall and the direct access to the swimming arena. Above all, the barrier-free parking spaces and family parking spaces are to be located here. A buffer area for additional parking is available near the existing sports hall. The pedestrian bridge provides easy access to the carparking spaces in the planned parking deck

on the far side of the B3 motorway. From the carpark it should be possible to grasp the articulated elongated building in its entirety, so that the symbolic gesture of the bridge can also be understood.
The carpark slopes slightly, which means that from the raised edge you already have a good overview of the outdoor space of the swimming arena and, at the same time, can take an easy route to the passageway, designed with ramps and flights of steps. This is the point where the footbridge – possibly a bicycle bridge – connects.

„Unique Selling Point“

An uncompromising response was made to the jury’s justifiable criticism in the first competition phase, allowing the “unique selling point” to be made use of. Regrouping the functional areas led not only to better qualities but also, more importantly, to the economically coherent interlocking of the volumes produced by the system. Moving the sauna onto the roof was precisely NOT intended to increase the building’s total volume or height, rather using the prescribed minimum room height for various other areas, made it possible to integrate the sauna in an overall system. In addition, by freeing the area at lawn level originally envisaged for the sauna in the first competition phase, all the technical and operational spaces could be accommodated. This made it possible to dispense almost entirely with a basement – apart from a small area for the swimming pool technology – that would, in any case, have been technically difficult to build. As a result, the economic optimisation called for is achieved.

As in phase 1, the main entrance with ticket desk was left in the middle of the passageway. This area was altered by placing the entire administration here, which now relates directly to the ticketing. The ancillary spaces and the rooms used for operating the restaurant are on the floor below and can be reached directly by stairs or lift. Access down to the outdoor area of the baths is either indoors (by stairs and barrier-free lift) via the changing area, or outdoors, by a stairs that leads past the outdoor changing/cabin area. This sequence is also intended for winter-time use: having paid at the cash desk you

access the ice-skating rink via the changing area. The landscape design proposes an approach route for skaters that runs across the site, between the trees, to the skating rink, which is located beside the tennis courts – in this way traversing the distance, which could be seen as a disadvantage, becomes an additional experience. The beach volleyball courts remain in their existing location. They can be reached easily and openly – past the swimming kiosk with a covered terrace below the passageway platform. To allow them to be used independently of the baths, they could be separated below the passageway.

The main level of the swimming pool hall was optimised in terms of both area and volume. Reorganising the additional functions (steam bath, infra-red cabins…) ensures that the pool attendant has a clear view of the pools. In any case we further strengthened the generous nature of the complex with its panorama views.
We see the extensive terrace areas, which from a cost viewpoint could certainly be regarded critically and can also be optimised, as offering a special quality and we therefore continue to propose them:
Whether you are on the edge facing the Danube bank or, on the other side, turn a meditative gaze towards the silhouette of the historic gem that is the town of Krems – what could be better than being able to say: “Why bring the town to the Danube – here we are IN Krems ON the Danube!”
