The Pinkaboden school campus should initially be viewed in terms of its village aspects, which generate a structured use of open space for the construction site. These aspects are, of course, based on existing qualities and characteristics to which they are linked.

Grafik 01

Here we find the access and driveway area to the current school grounds as an already defined open space, which also has the community center as a counterpart. While retaining the existing functions, this area is practically being expanded into a community square that can create an event complex with the newly built and sensitively positioned sports hall. In this way, it is strengthened in the public center of the town in the sense of a shared space. The gymnasium acts as a backdrop for public events, can even be opened up to it if required and is also available

to the public as an event center. The existing schoolyard of the listed building will be complemented by a second schoolyard. Nuanced uses are inscribed in both. The existing schoolyard will be enclosed by a canopy and surrounded by communal facilities such as the kitchen, dining hall and library. This creates a multifunctional patio that can also be protected from the sun or light rain with sails. The second schoolyard will have a different character with nature, trees, hills and a stage and is intended to create the activities of a schoolyard.

Clear organization - Radical modularity

The overall layout shows a clear division of functions - there is the sports wing, the classroom wing and the multifunctional and creative functions in the center, which in principle can be accessed by everyone within a short distance. The composition principle of the school cluster consists of a proven modularity. Modules of 8x8m are laid out as the main grid, creating flexibility and adaptability in many respects.

Grafik02

The classroom wing is designed as a contemporary organization according to the cluster principle. There are three clusters on three levels within this section of the building. They correspond to the different needs of the respective age group, but are all planned according to the same principle: all class/group rooms are open to the center with open space class and alternative class or multifunctional space (MUFU) as a market/learning/play zone. Such an arrangement enables learning and working alone or in smaller and larger groups. All clusters have access to the open space.

A variety of visible references to the green outdoor space are created. Clear access points to the open space (garden, courtyards, balconies, terraces) lead naturally into nature. The open space with its trees and various “squares” evoke contact with nature (hills, fountains, fruit and vegetable gardens, sunny and shaded areas).
